A friend of ours has some land and it was suppose to be covered up with turkeys. My husband, Shane, is a big turkey hunter, me, not so much. In fact I have never turkey hunted before. We took all 3 boys with us on this trip. Two of which have been turkey hunting, but Holt and I <strike>are</strike> were rookies. <br />
We left on a Thursday night 935 PM to be exact after Gage and Owen's little league game. I managed to drive until about 330 AM and had to pull over somewhere in Missouri. I had had all I could take. I had chewed 2 packs of gum, and had listened to the radio loudly while all of the men folk( ages 30 something, 10, 8, and 5) were snoring away. Every now and then one would wake up to see where we were, and Shane woke up long enough to guide me through the back way of Memphis., TN. When I finally pulled over and switched from driver to passenger, I was able to sleep a few hours before we stopped to fill up and the boys woke up. There was NO going back to sleep after that because they were full of a thousand questions. I mean did they think of all these questions while they slept..GEEEZZ! <br />
Let me just say I have never seen fields for miles and miles like they have in Illinois. Down here we don't see that because we are covered up with forest. It took a little getting use to.<br />
We went through Mark Twain's home town, and got all kinds of questions like " Who is Mark Twain?"...Really? I thought they would have learned that in school by now?! <br />
We rolled into Carthage, IL about 10 AM. <br />
I was tired and ill and wanted to sleep. BUT NO! We had to go set up the blind for turkey hunting...not a happy camper!<br />
After we got all that done we checked into the Prairie Winds Motel...can you say Anthony Perkins type, you know from, Psycho??? I t was a good little motel though and the people were friendly, even though the thought we had accents. Anyway, I finally got to sleep. I am sure everyone was thankful of that.<br />
The next day, 430 AM came awful early, we made it to our spots. We were suppose to be able to sit in the blind and kill a turkey, but that was not the case. Illinois had had a mild winter and everything was about a month early. The grass was thigh high and extremely thick. Owen, Holt and I wasted our first morning, but I didn't know what I was doing anyway. Shane, however, managed to kill one quickly.<br />

Over the weekend we met up with some friends of ours that live there. Ryan took Holt and me hunting one morning. We walked and climbed listening and moving. Let's just say this was not flat country we were on here, it was uphill both was... We finally get on a turkey and he is gobbling his head off. We had to move on him several times because he was on another ridge. We sat and waited and he finally made an appearance. Only he was behind some thick trees and undergrowth. He was hung up for about 20 minutes just gobblin' and struttin'. He finally decided to mosey on around into a clearing where I could get a shot. AND BANG!!!! I would love to show you a picture of the turkey I killed, but I MISSED! Yep that's right shot right over him....WTH!! As soon as we realized I had missed, Holt says to me " Momma, were you aiming?" and " Its my turn to shot now because you missed you didn't aim very well?" He continued to give me third degree about missing...really? Your 5 and you are giving me the blues about missing a turkey?<br />
While all this was going on Shane had the older 2 boys, and Gage wouldn't pull the trigger and Owen missed too.<br />
Well Ryan had to go back to work the next day, so I was on my own. Shane gave me a lesson on using a slate call that evening. The next day I tromped through the woods with Gage as a tag along while Owen and Holt went with Shane. Wish I could show you a picture of a turkey here too, but we had technical difficulties like scaring a turkey off the roost. Then we were able to get on 2 turkeys both gobblin and struttin'. They were coming up the ridge all I could see were the very tops of the tail feathers when the strutted, and the tip of their heads when they gobbled. They were coming, I just knew they were about to top the hill, when, ***POOF**** off they went. I don't know what happened. SO I was one ticked off lady. <br />
The next day we were at it again.Owen and I ventured back into the woods. Once again I scared a turkey off the roost, I am so terrible at this! I finally get on a turkey and I am waiting and waiting, he is gobbling like crazy and all of a sudden he stops and I never here another word. Not sure what happened, but we had seen a coyote upclose and personal the afternoon before. Shane and I were walking towards the creek when we met the coyote literally face to face at the top of a hill. We were both caught so off guard we just stood there and the coyote ran off. I think we scared it as much as it scared us becuase it had a look on its face like WTH???!! wen hears two more turkeys and as we are easing up the road we come up on two gobblers in the road and scare them...yes I suck I know! While Owen and I were hunting Shane, Holt and Gage were hunting and once again Gage would not pull the trigger on his turkey.<br />
This place did have a lot of turkeys, but I couldn't get it done. Let me just say that turkey hunting is a lot of work, and is literally for the birds. Will I doit again? Maybe, but it is the most frustrating thing to be on a turkey and it change its mind about what it wants to do. There were alot of ugly words said these few days.<br />
<br />
Let me tell you what we did manage to get though, TICKS, and lots of them. They were everywhere. Everyday we would get about 20 off of us and then when we made it back to the motel we would find more. They were so bad that we find them in the truck and on the outside of the truck. The place that we hunted, use to be a dairy farm, had not been farmed in many years and they had not done any burning, so it was a tick oasis. The boys aptly named it <span style="font-size: large;"><em><strong>Tickinois</strong></em></span>.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15798325025910689470noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593596083988574979.post-7293685608449837772012-05-10T12:59:00.000-05:002012-05-10T12:59:11.047-05:00Gone too long<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<em><strong>Well, </strong></em>it has been a while since our last post. Way too long actually. We have been busy with life and to be perfectly honest I have been too lazy to post. We have been hunting and fishing though.<br />
So I guess I will post some pictures and update y'all on all of our adventures.</div>

Let me start with Gage's first big bass. It was about 6 pounds and he caught it on a brim bait. He was so excited, aptly naming it </div>

We started long before the organic movement came to pass. All of these environmentalist, green living, organic living/eating people think that they are on to something new. Really? <br />
News flash...<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="color: orange; font-size: large;">YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING ORIGINAL!!!!</span></strong><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
My husband's family always had a very large garden we are talking lots of acres, but not necessarily a farm in the latter years. Mr. David, "Popee", who just turned 94 years old, WWII veteran, and still lives in he same place he was born and raised, always grew enough to feed his family as well as enough to sell or mostly give away to many other families. They also harvested there own meat whether it was a cow that they raised or a free ranging wild animal. Popee grew up during the great depression and they had to survive the best way they could. They grew their own food and killed and ate their own meat. And raised two children.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIu2cgXqa7sBJYDYyFZIxbmTOylwjqYmllEwsYwGq72K8ZmaZRcamAvjAQvFI_18NNzsf0lC9qMvQ-F6wjhhIZwxboeF6JDdFSST-9DwrHDRnFb7tpHIbamRteRKlU-ymWDnUwIbA9hOs/s1600/mamaw+poppe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIu2cgXqa7sBJYDYyFZIxbmTOylwjqYmllEwsYwGq72K8ZmaZRcamAvjAQvFI_18NNzsf0lC9qMvQ-F6wjhhIZwxboeF6JDdFSST-9DwrHDRnFb7tpHIbamRteRKlU-ymWDnUwIbA9hOs/s400/mamaw+poppe.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Popee and Mamaw<br />
Picture taken by their great granddaughter BrieAnna Harper</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
My husband tells stories of being a young child and having to help harvest the garden. Rows and rows of field peas, butter beans, which he will not eat to this day, tomatoes, okra, acres of corn,etc. Helping in the garden went on for years until Popee got to where he couldn't do it like he use to. Now we( my brother in law, Stanton) have a much smaller garden- which I hope to help make it bigger this year--that my boys and I helped in a little. It is a pain in the arse to say the least, but we know where it came from and what went into it. <br />
<br />
I met my husband when I was 16--- you know that's only been like a few years ago, wink wink, nod, nod. As far as I know, I don't know that my mother in law ever had to buy much, if any, beef from the store. I think she always used free range, organic, grass fed, acorn fed, wild deer. The fish were also harvested out of the creeks, ponds, or the river. The turkeys were also free range.<br />
<br />
My dad was born in a dirt floor cabin and was 1 of 7 children. They had to keep their milk, which they milked fresh from their milk cow, in the creek to keep it cold. He tells stories of getting in trouble for eating the fresh cream off the top because my Grandmother needed it to make fresh churned butter.They also had a smoke house to cure their own meat. They killed what they needed, and ate it to survive. They also raised animals for slaughter and had a garden. <br />
<br />
So you see, "We were organic when organic wasn't cOOooool". <br />
<br />
I recently became an addict of the website pinterest. The other day I saw an anti-hunting "pin" that said something to the affect of <em>Why don't people just get their meat from the grocery store where no animals were harmed...</em>I could not find that pin again to save my life, I have looked for it for days<em>.</em> Then a blogger/twitter friend wrote an article with a similar sentiment that also came from pinterest... <a href="http://huntlikeyourehungry.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html" target="_blank">Hunt Like Your Hungry "Cowardly Hunter"</a> . Seriously where do people think the meat products come from in the grocery store? Do they think they just magically appear and no animal had to be slaughtered for that nice juicy ribeye to get in that little cellophane and styrofoam package. What about those chicken pieces...do they think they just laid them like an egg all processed and breaded?<br />
<br />
In our grocery store, ground beef is anywhere from $3.50-3.98 a pound. The other day we put up a little more than 50 lbs of ground deer meat. Now it cost us $10.00 for the beef fat that we mixed with it and we ground it ourselves. So let's see 50lbs of free range venison for $10 = about 20 cents a lb... Not only is this environmentally sound, but economical as well..Geez I have 3 growing boys and husband. Not to mention we have several shoulder roast, hams and loins that we put in the freezer 2 days ago. Now this may not last all year, but it will last a while. <br />
<br />
I understand that some people may not like meat or they choose not to eat it, or they just can't see themselves killing or eating <em>Bambi, or Little Bunny Foo Foo</em>; however don't condemn me or my family because we CHOOSE to be green and help sustain ourselves through hunting, and fishing. I mean don't hate us because we are OG.... Original Green! We aren't hatein' on them because they are stealing some of our OG swagga.<br />
<br />
We, as hunters and fisherman, were stewards for the environment long before this green movement came to be as well. Hunters and their organizations are far more responsible and conscious of environmental issues than most non hunters. We usually plant products to help fed and maintain the health of our wildlife populations. We have been responsible for the growth of populations of different wild game, which were non existent or on the brink of being non existent in areas. There are many organizations that hunters contribute financially to as well and donate their harvest to in order to help feed people who for some reason can not feed their self. <br />
<br />
I suppose the point is "A Country Boy Can Survive"...Thank you Hank Williams, Jr.<br />
<br />
Just like tonight, we went after school and caught some nice little bass from an old pond in the middle of no where. The boys are enjoying the freshly fried organically grown bass with fresh homemade french fries. We have been doing stuff just like this for years.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">So Hunt On my fellow OGs!</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The Small Print</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">I don't believe in "If its brown its down" or "Shooting anything that moves." Yes I hunt big bucks or trophy hunt, but I assure you I also eat what I kill. By hunting mature deer you equalize the herd and allow the herd to grow. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">If you choose to be a vegetarian or vegan that's your choice, but I don't, I like to be a omnivore. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Yes, I have killed Bambi's momma and daddy and Little Bunny Foo Foo too. I also ate them.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Please feel free to leave a comment, but if you do so in a disrespectful manner please understand you will get a disrespectful response. We all have our opinions and our ways of life. When the Apocalypse comes I will be able to survive. Will you without the grocery store?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Yes, I do shop at the grocery store and yes I buy meat there, BUT I know animals had to be slaughter for it to get there, and I don't have a problem with that.</span>Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15798325025910689470noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593596083988574979.post-75123180332906261592012-02-02T17:32:00.000-06:002012-02-02T17:32:09.670-06:00The HEART of the MatterSo the other day while we were skinning the deer, the boys and Shane decided they wanted to try to eat the deer's heart. ( YIKES!!!) "What you talkin' 'bout Willis?", was my reaction. I mean seriously...I don't eat much fish, much less organ meat. It just sounds disgusting...Right?! <br />
Well, I always try to try new things, so I decided I was game. Now those who know me well know that smells and textures are important to me...so I was weary to say the least. I'm not a picky eater by any means, but....deer HEART???<br />
<br />
We came home and tried our hand at cooking the deer heart, and this is what we discovered.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi499JHMQtnxxAd5YzVkVuohhbb_B_9uTHpYiqQtuI7f_ULblSauMkD5m3WPXNA9DQfQZ1-WxG6tgLC7ac31W8pEn4aDSXALaOMQfgOcEdb9X1Awdtyi5lh7CCThGhTlTn5vviXGl9YfA0/s1600/085.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi499JHMQtnxxAd5YzVkVuohhbb_B_9uTHpYiqQtuI7f_ULblSauMkD5m3WPXNA9DQfQZ1-WxG6tgLC7ac31W8pEn4aDSXALaOMQfgOcEdb9X1Awdtyi5lh7CCThGhTlTn5vviXGl9YfA0/s400/085.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First we got the heart out of the deer and washed in cold water REALLY well.</div>
<br />
There is a fine membrane around the heart that you need to peel off. Its a bit like trying to find the end of a piece of scotch tape. But just keep working and peel it off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLsWKsLee4Rr6lJlZTqLBr3zuuGmz2K2CWRjYKY8BNIJdTnUMXxNu1O3RWEPogaAE-ACHkEWS3kD4kDFPVLDRL6irXGIThN4BhyphenhyphenmVVYSYZuHo7eyDZrBA36h_X3sG-u-1quF9JKM__UhA/s1600/090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLsWKsLee4Rr6lJlZTqLBr3zuuGmz2K2CWRjYKY8BNIJdTnUMXxNu1O3RWEPogaAE-ACHkEWS3kD4kDFPVLDRL6irXGIThN4BhyphenhyphenmVVYSYZuHo7eyDZrBA36h_X3sG-u-1quF9JKM__UhA/s400/090.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next we started at the smaller end and began to slice it in to small slices about a half inch thick. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfqo41a5sv3n1b0_JNt7DDzLx0Wb_aK67uFpo_hVu8kDXkW-xP71lb8g9VL6np_FTDoydUj9-7KBG06T2U3S0Dys4nJuqQOtEiU0PBIj7pXNNL4n_LeES4hTbBTAkzbVUUiXH6MgL6QQw/s1600/092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfqo41a5sv3n1b0_JNt7DDzLx0Wb_aK67uFpo_hVu8kDXkW-xP71lb8g9VL6np_FTDoydUj9-7KBG06T2U3S0Dys4nJuqQOtEiU0PBIj7pXNNL4n_LeES4hTbBTAkzbVUUiXH6MgL6QQw/s320/092.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the top of the heart you will find the ventricles and fat, we discarded those. You will be able to tell a difference in firmness. This area is almost hard.</div>
<br />
Then we cut those pieces into smaller pieces. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjExm4ldgnhfHCXkplf5jSzXMIsv2bo4XfR5KgSpQZmo9KiZNsfVNqoPfVAgzAgmYu-InaN6S5e029iqzukaoBjkOFSNouiqmRGi7Ss4ZwEhyxFpTgOdcsDiNwqVheUtApx7uBrM0snSDM/s1600/094.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjExm4ldgnhfHCXkplf5jSzXMIsv2bo4XfR5KgSpQZmo9KiZNsfVNqoPfVAgzAgmYu-InaN6S5e029iqzukaoBjkOFSNouiqmRGi7Ss4ZwEhyxFpTgOdcsDiNwqVheUtApx7uBrM0snSDM/s320/094.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We soaked it in cold water to try and make sure we got all of the blood clots out of the meat.</div>
<br />
We then cooked it 3 different ways. We didn't really know where to start so we just winged it.<br />
I soaked some in Italian dressing, cumin, and cajun seasoning, some in worcestershire and cajun seasoning, and floured and fried the rest. I pan seared the other two.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Now, I am no Georgia Pellegrini , but I was really impressed with what we did. I was surprised that it tasted really good. For some reason I was thinking it would taste like the liver and onions my mother use to make me eat (YUCK!!), pleasantly I was very impressed. The texture was fine it seemed to be a lot like any other piece of deer meat, and it didn't smell any different.<br />

What we did as an experiment was very simple, but watch out because next year we will be trying it again. I am definitely going to be doing some research and try to find a good recipe or maybe create one.<br />

The End. The inevitable. The finale. The fat lady has sung. It is official, Alabama's 2011-2012 deer season has come and gone. Finished. BOOOOO!!!!<br />
<br />
Anyway, we went out with a a BANG!, literally. Gage killed a seven point hunting by his self Monday. So it was his first kill sitting by his self. He was so excited he could hardly contain his self.<br />
I wish I could have recorded him when we pulled up. Hilarious!<br />

Notice the little fella in the back ground!! LOL!</div>
Tuesday the very last day at last light I shot a small "cull" buck. He turned out to be a 6 point, but I thought he was bigger. He came out close to the stand running a doe, I tried to wake Owen, but couldn't and shot him before he left the patch. Not too much to brag on, but hey more MEAT!!!<br />

So our weather has really been terrible in south Alabama lately and so has our hunting. Now let me say that we have seen some deer and I have let a 9 point walk and the same 8 point walk twice to the dismay of my 8 year old. I suppose I should have let him shoot the 8 point, but it was 4:15 in the afternoon and I thought a much bigger deer was going to grace us with his presence, however; he must have had something else on his mind. So I have endured 4 days of... "Why didn't you let me shoot that deer?", and "Momma, I can't believe you didn't let me shoot it! Will you let me shoot it next time?", every 30 minutes.<br />
We have captured a few nice bucks on our game cameras though.<br />

A friend of mine, Karen Baxter, sent me some pictures of a black bear that they have captured on their game camera. Black bears in south Alabama are not that common to see. They are also illegal to kill and are protected in our area. They caught the bear in a patch aptly named "The Bear Patch".<br />

Like many people we were busy during Christmas vacation. This year our time was shorter, by 3 days, than normal due to a change in the school schedule. However, we persevered and were able to fit in a lot of happenings.<br />
We started off with a duck hunt at the beaver pond one morning. The hubs had scouted it the day before and it was loaded with ducks. We had some ran move the day and night before, but we set out on that adventure anyway only to find - as usual with ducks- they are there one day and not the next. The walk across the beaver dam was a little treacherous,but hey anything for ducks, right??!! We were able to get a few though...<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We also took a trip to Cuba, Alabama to visit my other BNL, Scott. They have a hunting camp up that way so we took the kids and they got to have a good time with their cousins.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also the hubs and Owen got lucky and found this little fella wandering around.</div>

Holt also "killed" his first buck with his Uncle Stanton on a deer drive. According to Holt he shot the deer. He "says" he pulled the trigger and Uncle Stanton helped hold the shot gun. Well, that's their story and they are sticking to it anyway. After a little celebrateing and dancing around Uncle Stanton was able to snap a picture.</div>

We celebrated the new year with a family get together at the skinin' shed. We grilled, cooked collards in the old cast iron wash pot( you can see it hanging over the fire in the picture) and roasted marshmallows by the fire. However, no one in my crew made it to see midnight central time. But I am sure we were awake to celebrate in other time zones.</div>

<div style="border: currentColor;">
2011, has been an eventful year. There has been many first some great, some not so much. I suppose everyone has there ups and downs through out the year. The year started out with me killing my first deer in 10 years. My middle child, Owen and I killing a buck on the same day, the same evening in two different patches. That is definitely own of the best memories of 2011. </div>

Also, 2011, was the year of my duck-a-holic obsession. Although I don't get to indulge near enough. I had always been afraid of duck hunting, because when I was in about the 9th grade a boy that I went school with had gone duck hunting with his family and it had a tragic outcome. I don't know the details specifically, but he accidentally shot his cousin in the back of the head. The boy was never the same again, and I have carried that with me forever. With great reservation I decided to buy a duck hunt at the local Athletic Club auction that they hold every year for the high school. I bought the duck hunt from a fella that we have know it seems since he was knee high to a grasshopper, Blane Dolbare. The day of the duck hunt came and we drove WWWAAAYYYY back in the woods(like a scene from a horror flick), to camp that is own by Blane's family on the Tombigbee River. Let's just say it was extremely cold and dark, and those that know me know I freeze when the mercury dips below 70 and it was about in the low twentys. </div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<div style="border: currentColor;">
We put the boat in at dark30 and made I way through sunken logs, cypress tress, and knees to one of Blane's spots. As the sun began to peak its head the ducks were already flying. We could hear them, but we could not see them. Soon enough though the shots began to ring out. I wasn't exactly sure how this was going to work out for me though. Before long I had my first duck. I even shot the back of head off of one poor duck. I think even Blane commented that he didn't think I would shoot as well as I did.(It was something to that effect anyway, right, Blane?) </div>

<br />
We ended the morning with our limit and headed back to camp. His mom, Mrs. Gloria, had breakfast cooked and the camp warm. It really was a fantastic time for me.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
Did I mention that Blane graduated this year from The University of Alabama Law School and PASSED the BAR Exam? So if you are in Alabama and are in need of a lawyer he is your man. He comes highly recommend. Thanks Blane for the great hunt and for helping people out in need of a lawyer, not that I would know anyone or anything.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border: currentColor; margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
After that duck hunt I can officially say I am a duck-a-holic! "Hello my name is Erica and I am a duck-a-holic." Is there a 12 step program for this? My husband was even able to talk me into buying a duck boat after this hunt. Was this a conspiracy between these two men? I don't know, but the jury is still out on that question... I think I was bamboozeled...<br />
<br />
My oldest killed his biggest deer ever hunting with me the same day his dad killed a deer in Illinois. We also took Owen and Gage on their first duck hunting trip. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
This year has also been a year for reconnection with a person who has meant alot to me and has probably shaped my life more than I realized. My <strike>step </strike>Dad, Nick. We have not really spoken in about 10 years or so due to many reasons. But he raised me since I was about 3. He and my mom divorced a while back, and now he is remarried and is living the cowboy life in Wyoming(BRRRRR!!). He seems to be thoroughly enjoying his retirement and living there. We have many things in common. We share the same birthday, views on many things from politics to....., we also share the uncanny ability to be a real smart ass all the time without trying and many times unintentionally(ok maybe not). The latter seems to be an advantage or disadvantage depending on which end you seem to be on, the receiving or the giving, and depending on how you view things, people, and their subsequent stupidity. So one of these days I plan on making a trek to Wyoming for a visit...you never know what the cat (or wolf in this case) may drag up. This is a great thing as well for this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Learning and Teaching</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
"Judge not lest ye be judged."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
"If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man's religion is worthless" James 1:26</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;">
I am not on overly religious person, but these two verses really seem to ring true for this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
This has also been the year for people to show who they really are when they think no one is looking. After all, isn't there always someone looking?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
It's a funny thing ... people and life. Even people you seem to put on a pedestal, whether intentionally or not, don't deserve to be there. They will disappoint you every time. They were probably pretending to be the person you only thought they were, but in the end they always reveal the truth about themselves. ...Lesson taught and learned!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
Things I know to be true about myself, which this year has just reaffirmed these things:</div>
<ul>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
I am who I am no matter what or who is watching. -What you see is what you get. Like it or get in line behind all others.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
I usually say what every one else is thinking...sometimes this isn't a good thing.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
I AM a person of my word. - I f I say I am going to do something... you need to put your money where you mouth is if you don't believe it. After all a person is only as good as their word or so I have been told. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
I don't, nor have I ever, like fake or pretend people.- So don't bother because I will not pretend for you so just keep it movin!. I don't put on dog and pony shows for people, however I do know people who have perfected this to a fine art.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
I absolutely loooovvveee ( sarcasm here, if you didn't pick up on it) people who act a certain way Monday-Saturday, but come Sunday try to pretend to be Holy than Thou. Reminds me of the Pharisees, or hypocrites, well there are many names for it. However, who am I to judge? I mean at least you're there, which I can't say the same for me, but that's probably why I am not there.</div>
</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;">Above all else I taught myself a lesson....</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;"> I am blessed beyond measure no matter what anyone says, does, or thinks because they are not the ones who matter.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Since we didn't kill any deer this week, I decided to slow down while walking down the trail and enjoy the scenery. We get so caught up in "LIFE," that sometimes we forget to stop and "smell the roses" ( or maybe the fungus in this case). <br />
I took these with my droid phone, I mean I'm not Ansel Adams or anything, but ...you get the point!<br />

The first ever for the boys. We were loaded up and truckin' and half way to the landing when Shane realized he had forgotten his phone and wallet, which held his hunting license and duck stamp. Since that was kind of important and you can't hunt LEGALLY without it, we turned around and headed back. By the time Stanton and Gage had all of their things unloaded and ready we arrived .</div>

We began to make our way out of the slough and into the open river. The Tombigbee was dark and quiet,and quite chilly. We made our way down the river to Okatuppa Creek making our way back into a slough. We meandered through the slough winding our way around cypress trees, knees, hidden stumps, and downed trees. This is a public area so its on a first come basis. We arrived to find someone had gotten into the spot where Gage and Stanton were going to go so they had to find another spot, which ended being just up the creek from us. It must have been the morning to hunt with family because the person that had gotten there first was hunting with a boy about Gage's age.<br />

Just as the sun started to lighten the dark sky we could here the ducks flying, but not see them.<br />
As the morning came alive so did we. Shane and I were trying to Owen a shot first and we passed on shooting several. Finally, Owen got one and we began to shoot too.We ended up with 7 ducks collected. I wounded one, when I went to retrieve him he literally disappeared, I think he swam up the little slough behind us.<br />

So ole Holt had to get him some glasses. You may remember from a previous post about my birthday that we visited the eye dr. <br />
Well he was a little farsighted and needed glasses. <br />
Here he is trying his new glasses on.<br />
He said he wanted Harry Potter glasses.<br />

If you have read some of my other post then you already know that I hunt too. Yesterday, after a long day at school, I rushed home to gather all my hunting gear so I could get in the woods somewhere. In hast I gathered everything I needed, except I couldn't find my binoculars so I "borrowed" Owen's since he was staying with Gran Gran. I got in the truck said bye to the hubs, as he was rushing to get ready too. <br />
Alone (yes all by myself, I know that is a rarity) I made it to my spot,parked, and walked into the most peaceful place with the best sound, the quite woods. I made my way through the paths and into the blind. Usually this particular spot at 4:12 in the afternoon has many does and yearlings, but not today. Nothing, notta, zip, zilch, you get the point. So I fiddled around with my phone checking deer movement times, twitter, and facebook of course. As time ticked by I couldn't believe that nobody was coming out to play. Dang acorns. We have had an exceptionally large crop of acorns this year and they are all falling at the same time. <br />
I checked the time while looking and searching, but nothing.Suddenly, out of no where, I saw a doe and her yearling. I thought well at least I get to watch something.<br />
A little spike came in and stood on his hind legs getting acorns off of an oak limb. He began chasing the doe all over the field, I just laughed, You have no chance buddy.<br />
At 5:10, ole Big Daddy came strolling in. He came in directly in front of me only presenting me with a chest shot.I watched for about 10 minutes before I would be able to shoot. The little yearling had meandered her way to the side of the blind about 10 yards away and saw me when I moved. She gave a little snort and he picked his head up and took one step directly towards me. She gave a snort again and finally he took a step sideways and I lowered the hammer on him. WOOOHOOO! BBD for momma!<br />

So Tuesday was my<strike> 36th </strike>uumm 26th birthday! My fellas decided they would take me out on the town, I said I would go where ever they wanted. We were also celebrating Owen's 8th birthday which will be on the 26th of November.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We headed to Mobile and our first stop was Felix's Fish Camp and Grill. The Camp sits on the Mobile Bay and I had never eaten there before and boy was I in for a surprise. The food was fantabulous. The service was just as fantabulous and we had one of the best waitresses, Amelia she was so cute and sweet.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We started off with 1 dozen oysters on the half shell and fried crab claws. These do not last long with my group.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They also have this great Crab soup that is rich and creamy and just divine.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I ordered the "Crab Stack", on Amelia's recommendation.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Diy8QuW9DHlDLxlqd28c4C4vGSWP-5KWtPYKtXl9t3j69hvMJz_NUWKGxPZPAs7RhHNrymiPGqyjwES3OHNa-a6wePKFFIq6ZHUBDHvaPS8DUi_fN_f9gWWEvghfNav05A6gJ5aYxTA/s1600/2011-11-22_11-58-12_252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Diy8QuW9DHlDLxlqd28c4C4vGSWP-5KWtPYKtXl9t3j69hvMJz_NUWKGxPZPAs7RhHNrymiPGqyjwES3OHNa-a6wePKFFIq6ZHUBDHvaPS8DUi_fN_f9gWWEvghfNav05A6gJ5aYxTA/s320/2011-11-22_11-58-12_252.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This fabulous meal was literally a stack of crab.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It started out on the bottom was a crispy fried green tomato, topped with humongous crab cake.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On top of the crab cake was a fried oft shell crab,and then jumbo lump crab meat. To top it all of off was a rich delicious Hollandaise sauce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Can you say </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
YYYYUUUUMMMMYYY!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And of course, two jalapeno hush puppies on the side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After we finally left the doctor's office we headed to my kids all time favorite plac,e Bass Pro Shops.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first thing we always do is head to the fish tank.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We were met with a first when we got to the tank.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the giant bass had eaten another fish and it's tail was sticking out of its mouth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was not a feeder fish either.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't know if you can tell from the picture, but that is a fish tail hanging out of its mouth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the workers said that they had put 5 crappie in the tank and that this bass had eaten all but one. The lone surviving crappie was hiding in the corner fearing for his life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We even made a picture with Santa before we left.</div>

Wrapped in Bacon</span></strong><br />
<br />
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
<ul>
<li>deer meat - deer steak cut into small pieces and pounded to tenderize (about 2 in. x 2 in. can be larger or smaller. )</li>
<li>cream cheese</li>
<li>jalapeno peppers diced or sliced( fresh or out of a jar)</li>
<li>toothpicks(wooden)</li>
<li>bacon- thin sliced bacon</li>
<li>Italian dressing</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXjJgcyzciWEd3uem2T-qMQO3B2cZmYBkHjQVSGGKqL6j_wb9_DGiUE5G9fPjSymRSusbtkNJQDuNLFJeq5VpbdBNsjKCeOK2GmCvUDAaicAdFBjx5or3SOf4Dl7_Ah97y9e5SFncsA6o/s1600/droids+pics+210.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXjJgcyzciWEd3uem2T-qMQO3B2cZmYBkHjQVSGGKqL6j_wb9_DGiUE5G9fPjSymRSusbtkNJQDuNLFJeq5VpbdBNsjKCeOK2GmCvUDAaicAdFBjx5or3SOf4Dl7_Ah97y9e5SFncsA6o/s320/droids+pics+210.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
First, you must tenderize your deer meat. It can be done several different ways. I use a meat pounder and tenderize it to oblivion on both sides. <br />
Once tenderized place the pieces into Italian dressing to marinate, usually an hour or two.<br />
<br />
Take a piece at a time and place cream cheese and jalapeno peppers in the center of the meat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkc-Tg1gFZKPxOnhetIT_itu5JrIR5hwii-_z04i6QmYsQEhNZ-CXuJiTMd1lSyCZQ1amysK83AkZcu5Tv07wmwEL2sfnBqZkp3mfP7sOXjjJj_911HjlhpIMPLXrxZVI-LQ2F8o4x_8M/s1600/droids+pics+211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkc-Tg1gFZKPxOnhetIT_itu5JrIR5hwii-_z04i6QmYsQEhNZ-CXuJiTMd1lSyCZQ1amysK83AkZcu5Tv07wmwEL2sfnBqZkp3mfP7sOXjjJj_911HjlhpIMPLXrxZVI-LQ2F8o4x_8M/s320/droids+pics+211.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see from the picture you only need a small amount of cream cheese.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5-H3CB6ws31OtwkXHxf9zS0zXjm_FD42sXtx4NHbEQ007a073A9WetS8Xi6D1T3DShVESXUW6RI5jD9P7SNm8H3-ZVljP2-Mu9jmQIg5nxJKTmle1LjKi1PKMCzlI3btJZzSgUK636Rk/s1600/droids+pics+212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5-H3CB6ws31OtwkXHxf9zS0zXjm_FD42sXtx4NHbEQ007a073A9WetS8Xi6D1T3DShVESXUW6RI5jD9P7SNm8H3-ZVljP2-Mu9jmQIg5nxJKTmle1LjKi1PKMCzlI3btJZzSgUK636Rk/s320/droids+pics+212.jpg" width="294" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once this is done roll the meat onto itself creating a roll or ball.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Take a slice of bacon and wrap around the meat and secure with a toothpick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You may be able to slice the bacon in half and only use a half piece depending on the quality of the bacon. I usually use the cheaper bacon for this because it has more fat and can stretch easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqF5QDQw8P9wL3qzNPXZHku8QUh7EJzLhKFZdbGPTecMJiFsjkhXIXaVRORyr_qakbGrm1LX_S0hepE2YIMFXCMyCoMzuj-hw0VfPCWN7jxuCQNw0m7u2w172D_lUD6k6yVGSPCwdkP-c/s1600/droids+pics+214.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqF5QDQw8P9wL3qzNPXZHku8QUh7EJzLhKFZdbGPTecMJiFsjkhXIXaVRORyr_qakbGrm1LX_S0hepE2YIMFXCMyCoMzuj-hw0VfPCWN7jxuCQNw0m7u2w172D_lUD6k6yVGSPCwdkP-c/s320/droids+pics+214.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see it is not rocket science and does not need to be extremely neat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once you have all of your deer balls wrapped place on the grill. Cook until the bacon is done. You want the bacon to be crispy when done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Take off the grill and let rest.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
ENJOY!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was going to take a picture of it when it was time to eat, well, 3 boys and 1 husband later they were gone before I could get there.</div>

Ronald "Slick" Sullivan is a 42 yr. old single father and farrier from Millry,Alabama. Empty Nest Syndrome lead him to equine activities that fed his soul and enlightened his spirit such as competing in stock horse events and competitive trail competitions (CTC's) with the American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA). His competitive nature was challenged with their 6 miles of trail,6 judg<span class="text_exposed_show">ed obstacle format. His congenial side met it's needs with several new friends he now couldn't wait to meet up with at the hosted rides.<br /> <br /> He and his horse,2003 AQHA Sorrel Gelding Curly Man McCue, did so well at these CTC's that they were soon leading the region in points! His Empty Nest Syndrome was replaced with the dilemma and stress of which trophy buckle to wear! In January, when ACTHA announced they were sponsoring a reality TV show in search of "America's Favorite Trail Horse", Slick knew he and Curly had to audition at the chance to win $100,000 in prizes and money! Of 1000 horse and rider teams, Slick and Curly made the cut of 100 that were invited to come to the finals and taping of AFTH in Blanco,Texas.<br /><br /><br /> We need you and all your friends and family to VOTE for ALQHA's FAVORITE Quarter Horse of the series!</span></div>

October 28 was the beginning of a new<strong> addiction</strong>. <br />
After a long day at school, which included the annual Fall Festival, we decided to go hunting again. The weather shifted from hot as Hades with no wind or rain to wind blowing, overcast,lite drizzle, and cool. <br />
We decided to split up and for me to attempt a solo bow hunt. As I got home and rushed to change clothes and gather all of my things I began to doubt if I would be any good at this. We drove to Gran Gran and Pawpaw's to drop the kids off. We made our way to the woods trying to decide where to go. I chose the Fork Field( pronounced faulk). <br />
Due to the location of the stand I had to make my way through the field. As I eased up to the field, I checked to see if any deer were already there. Thank goodness, no deer. I quickly made it to the other end found my stand, and ascended into the tree stand.<br />
To my relief, getting in the stand and getting settled was much easier than I had expected. I even got Pinkie( my bow) up with out any problems.<br />
As I got settled I had several deer come in a begin to graze. The wind was blowing and swirling and the trees were swaying. The deer seemed to wind me but then they would come right back in. I tried to read a book on my phone to pass time and the as I read I began to get a little sick.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Note to self:<br />
Do not read a book in a tree that is swaying..... </span><br />
<br />
I watched several gobblers feed and dust. As the light began to fade, I resigned myself to the fact that once again I would not get to shoot. Finally, I had a small deer come out, which turned out to be a maiden doe, but I wasn't sure about shooting her so I let her slide. A few minutes later a small knot head came out and immediately starting acting submissive and walking towards my tree. I turned to see exactly what he was doing and I saw a set horns through the trees. I got my bow and went ahead a stood up. I waited to make sure what I had. When the buck stepped out I couldn't believe what I was seeing. A 10 pointer at what I now know to be 27 steps. I began to get weak in my knees, my heart was racing and I was breathing hard and shaking. As he stepped out I took aim and let my arrow fly and fly it did, right under him and landed by his front foot! <em><strong>YES I MISSED</strong></em>! I knew as soon as I saw the arrow fly that I had missed. I was sick, literally. He ran off, but some of the other deer stayed around. I waited but to no avail he never came back. So once again he lives to see another day...Maybe next time.<br />

It is a pink,yes I know "pink", Diamond Bowtech. I knew if I got a pink one my boys wouldn't even think about touching it. Mentioning pink to them is like giving Superman a bag of kryptonite. I always thought that bow hunting was too hard and didn't think I would enjoy it. After shooting a bow that belonged to a friend of mine, I thought I would enjoy it. It was really more fun than I thought it would be. So none the less I purchased an "entry level" bow. <br />
We have really had fun shooting bows as a family and with friends. My brother in law, our resident bow hunting expert ( I use the term expert loosely), built a platform to practice shooting. We have used it several times. I was really better at bow shooting than I thought I would be. Although, extremely far from an expert I can assure you!<br />
So after practicing my husband convinced me to give it a go. We went around to several stands one afternoon and tried to decide where we would go. I did not want to go by myself the first time, as I am not a very good judge of distance. <br />
Our first trip was together to a ground blind in the Tree house patch. We had a couple of knot heads come out less than 5 yards from the blind. The wind wasn't steady and was swirling around. They winded us a bit and hopped off a a little ways, but never left the field. They seemed to calm down and a few more deer came out in the upper end of the field. It was hard for me to see the upper end due to some branches. As time slipped by I figured we were here to just watch the scenery. Shane began looking at the upper end because he said that the deer were acting like they were seeing something. All of a sudden he says, "Yep, there's a buck. Oh my God! There is a huge buck!" <br />
"Stop lying! You're full of it! I am not even going to look because you are just saying that" I replied.<br />
Laughingly he says,"No seriously, I swear there is a huge buck in the upper end of the field."<br />
So I lean up almost hanging out of the blind and sure enough there he stands looking all majestic, velvet freshly shed, and 11 points pointig skyward, but oh so far to even think about shooting. He was accompanied by another smaller buck. All of a sudden the wind swirls again and they are gone, bouncing and running of into the thick woods.<br />
We sat there watching and in a few minutes they return, but ever so cautiously. We could see the big buck and his little companion in the tree line. In fact all I could see was his antlers. As they eased back into the field I began to think maybe just maybe he would wander over far enough and find himself an the pointy end of one of my arrows. However, as luck would have it that was not the case. They did ease back into the field, but as they inched closer and closer towards our ground blind they winded us again.<br />
So Shane and I decided to go ahead and leave because it was getting late and we could avoid scaring any deer by waiting. So he lives to see another day!<br />
Maybe next time....Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15798325025910689470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593596083988574979.post-70877178643771422852011-11-02T18:50:00.000-05:002011-11-05T07:37:02.849-05:00Say Cheese!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We decided to go and check game cameras this afternoon. We had several set out in a couple of different places. The most exciting thing is we captured the big fella from our joint bow hunting trip at the Tree house. He was in a different field though. We also captured a couple of other bucks as well!!!! <br />

We have several game cameras set out and they are made by several different brands. By far the best camera is the one we captured these images with. This camera belongs to our son, Owen. It has worked fantastically from the begining and captures great pictures day or night. We try to go and set out and check cameras together so that everyone can be involved.Ericahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15798325025910689470noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8593596083988574979.post-92063234432971048062011-11-01T15:58:00.001-05:002011-11-18T16:19:14.883-06:002 Deer One Evening<div>

<strong><span style="font-size: large;">A Two Deer Tale:</span></strong><br />
<br />
The first of the two deer to fall was my 7 year old, Owen's. He was hunting with his dad, my husband, Shane. My oldest son, Gage, and I were hunting together this particular afternoon. They were hunting at a patch we refer to as the Treehouse. This is the same place where I had killed a 11 point many years earlier (1999). Back before I stopped hunting because I was busy having and raising babies. This was my first year to get back into hunting since the boys were either big enough to go or stay with one of the grandparents. We were hunting in The Fork Field, however we pronounce it "Faulk", an ode to my husband's great grandfather who pronounced fork "faulk". <br />
<br />
Gage and I thought it would be another day skunked by the deer. As we resided ourselves to again leave the patch empty handed we heard a loud BOOOMMM! Simultaneously,y we looked at one another and we both said "Well, Owen got him one!" It was 5 P.M. on the dot. As the light began to fade every so quickly, we were getting ready to leave. I kept saying " In a minute.", to his questions of, "When are we leaving?"<br />
<br />
As I took one last look through my binoculars, panning and searching the field, hoping for a nice buck to walk I think I see something in the edge of the woods. As I stare through the binoculars I think I see something then I think I don't then I think I do and this cycle continues for about a minute. I tell Gage that there is a buck and I need him to keep an eye on it. Well it was just about too dark for him to see. I eased my gun out the window and try to take aim, I find the deer, I'm shaking, breathing hard, my hart is racing and beating in my ears, I can't hardly think, and squeeze the trigger. BBBOOOOOOOMMMM! <br />
<br />
Low and behold just when we thought we were leaving this nice fella stepped out across the patch just in time for Momma to get her one and only deer of the season. Owen and Shane show up to help get our deer and we begin to tell our tales. to one another. It has been a great memory for all of us. We love to talk about it. It was also a great return to hunting for me after a 10 year break. We will continue to reminisce about this for years to come. We will always be able to say "Remember when we killed those bucks on the same day?"<br />
<br />
This is why we hunt with our children. Making memories for a lifetime.<br />
